AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA)

AMPA Overview:

The AMSA Mandated practical assessment is proscribed by AMSA to issue a Certificate of Competency (CoC) for both Coxswain 1 and Coxswain 2 and is recommended for a General Purpose Hand.

This AMPA is for the Coxswain 1NC assessment and will require 2 days of in-person assessing to complete the following tasks: 

• Operate a vessel 
• Service a diesel engine
• Use navigational charts
• Sea survival activities that includes swimming for at least 50m
• Fire safety activates that includes fighting live fires
• Seamanship: knots and splices

A Coxswain 2NC and General Purpose Hand will have less tasks to complete and are priced cheaper. If you require an AMPA for either a Coxswain 2NC or a General Purpose Hand do give us a call and we will give you a discounted price.

We are flexible with students where possible and give the opportunity for students to plan ahead. It is important to chose the correct dates for your assessment. To avoid any late change fees, you are required to give us at least 2 weeks notice from your scheduled AMPA if you would like to change course dates.

Provided you have completed your assessment successfully, you will receive your AMPA forms at the end of your assessment signed by AMSA approved instructors.

You can use these forms alongside your required documents to apply for a Coxswain or GPH licence with AMSA. Your documents should include your complete qualification certificate with transcript, First Aid, relevant sea time, AMSA medical assessment and Radio operator licence.
