Your question is not here?
Can I complete the entire Coxswain or General Purpose Hand course online?
The theory component can be completed online, but practical training and assessment must be completed face-to-face with us to meet maritime certification requirements.
What is the difference between a Coxswain and a General Purpose Hand?
A General Purpose Hand (GPH) works as a deck crew member, assisting with vessel operations under supervision. A Coxswain is qualified to command certain commercial vessels, operate engines, navigate safely, and supervise crew within the limits of their certificate.
Who should enrol in these courses?
These courses are suitable for people seeking employment in the commercial maritime industry, including fishing, tourism, aquaculture, marine transport, ports, and government marine operations.
How long does the online theory course take?
The time varies depending on your experience and study pace. Most students complete the online theory in approximately 30–50 hours for GPH and 50–90 hours for Coxswain 1NC. We recommend you allocate 2-3 hours per day for studies.
Do I need any previous boating experience?
No prior experience is generally required for the online theory. However, practical training and sea service requirements may apply before you can obtain your maritime certificate.
What equipment do I need to complete the online course?
You’ll need a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, along with an up-to-date web browser. Some activities may be easier to complete on a desktop or laptop. You’ll also need some specialty equipment for chart work. Read your specific course information and you’ll know exactly what you need for your course.
Is the online course self-paced?
Yes. You can study at your own pace, allowing you to fit your learning around work, family, and other commitments.
What happens after I finish the online theory?
After successfully completing the online theory, you’ll arrange practical training and assessment with us. Once all training, assessment, sea service (where required), and medical requirements are met, you can apply for the relevant certificate.
Will I receive a certificate after completing the online course?
Certificates are not awarded until the full course with the practical and assessments is complete. Only after you have successfully completed all required practical assessments and regulatory requirements you will receive your qualification certificate or certificate of unit competencies.
Is the online course recognised across Australia?
If the course is delivered by an RTO using nationally recognised training units, the completed theory component is recognised throughout Australia. Your final certificate of competency is issued in accordance with the requirements of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
Can I study the online theory while working full-time?
Yes. The courses are designed to be flexible and self-paced, allowing you to study when it suits your schedule. You can access the course materials 24/7 from any device with an internet connection.
What support is available if I need help during the course?
If you have questions while studying, you’ll have access to trainer support via email or phone and in your learning portal. Our team is available to help clarify course content, answer technical questions, and guide you through the next steps toward completing your qualification.
How long will I have access to the online course?
Course access periods vary depending on your enrolment. In most cases, students receive access for several months, giving them plenty of time to complete the theory component before progressing to practical training and assessment. Please check your enrolment details or contact us if you need an extension.
