How to service inflatable life Jacket
Introduction
Most manufacturers provide instructions on how to service a life jacket for recreational use. In the case your inflatable life jacket is for commercial use, then it must be serviced by a certified agent, however, as a recreational boat operator, you can do it yourself.
Whilst most Inflatable life jackets operate in the same way, some manufacturers will be different than others. It is important to read the instructions by the manufacturer of your life jacket to complete your annual service. The below service guide generally applies to most manufacturers of Inflatable life jackets.
Here’s five easy steps to follow:
01: First Step
Check for damage on the cover, straps, buckle and bladder. If there is any damage, do not attempt to repair it yourself.
The sun and sea salt can wear out the buckles on the life jacket. Be sure the plastic is not brittle and can successfully clip into place.
Be sure the straps have not frayed or have any cuts that will affect their integrity.

02: Second Step
Inflate the bladder with the mouth piece and leave overnight to see if it has lost pressure.
You can pressure test by using your hand to push on the bladder and get a good feel of the firmness.
If it has lost pressure, do not attempt to repair yourself.
Take it to your manufacturer/service agent so they can repair the bladder.

03: Third Step
Deflate the bladder using the cap on the mouth piece.
Insert the cap at the top of the mouth piece to release the valve. This will release air from the bladder.
You may need to roll the bladder with your other hand to help trapped air to come out of the valve.

04: Fourth Step
Inspect the cylinder for any damage.
Weigh the CO2 cylinder.
Look into the screw end of the cylinder and observe if the cylinder has been pierced.
If you see any rust on the cylinder, then you need to replace it.

05: Fifth Step
Pack away the life jacket neatly and ensure the manual inflation cord is easy to access.
You may need to do this a few times to ensure the bladder is not folded incorrectly or out of place.
Additionally, ensure the velcro straps/zippers are fastened so the bladder stays in place.

This is your 5 step guide on how you can easily service your inflatable life jacket. Be sure to record the service date on the bladder and on the certificate provided by the manufacturer (found online) of your life jacket.
Stay safe and happy boating!
