Your question is not here?
What time does the course start?
Our courses normally start between 7 and 8am and finish by 5pm. However, you may have an earlier/later start or an earlier/later finish, depending on class size and other factors.
Do I need to do the test at Service NSW?
If you complete the full course with us, you don’t need to do any tests at Service NSW. Just take the paperwork we give you at the end of the day and present it at any Service NSW Centre and you can get a licence on the spot.
Do I have to go out 3 separate times to do my practical component for the licence?
If you do your practical with us, you don’t need to go on the boat 3 times and complete a logbook. We will teach you everything you need to know to drive a boat and ensure you are confident and competent and sign you off on the practical component on the same day. If you decide to do your practical via a logbook, that is when you will need to do 3 separate trips with someone who has held a boat licence for more than 3 years.
What’s the minimum age for getting a boat licence in NSW?
In NSW, you can apply for a young adult licence at 12 years old. We see a lot of teens from suburbs like Ryde and Cronulla coming in with their parents to get certified before summer boating trips. You can also do the course if you are 11 and going to turn 12 within the next 12 months of the course date.
I’ve never driven a boat, do I need to have experience?
Our courses are designed for people who have no experience at all on the water. We cater for all ages and abilities with our modern vessel to ensure everyone is safe and comfortable. Our trainers will ensure you are comfortable and competent when learngin to drive a boat.
Do I need a separate boat licence to drive a jet ski in Sydney?
Yes – in NSW, you need a Personal Watercraft (PWC) licence, which is an upgrade from the general boating licence. We offer combined courses near Botany Bay where conditions are ideal for PWC handling and across all of our Sydney and Gosford venues.
Is there a practical component for the Jet ski licence?
No. To get a Jet Ski licence, you will do the normal Boating Course and then an extra training theory session with a test for the Jet Ski component.
Do I have to study before attending the course?
We recommend you have a skim through the SNSW website about rules and regulations. You can also read the NSW Boating Handbook and do the practice test before coming in to your course. If you don’t do any of the above, that’s ok! Our course instructors will teach you everything on the day to ensure you safely enjoy our waterways and confidently pass the test.
How close are you to Sydney Harbour for boat licence training?
We’re just a 10-minute drive from Sydney Harbour, with easy access via the Eastern Distributor. A lot of our students join our course in Rose Bay for our full day course.
Can I get my NSW boat licence in one day in Sydney?
Yes, you can complete both the theory and practical components in one day. We run full-day sessions in Sydney every weekend, often held near Iron Cove so you’re learning on familiar local waters.
What’s the best time of year to do a boat licence course in Sydney?
Autumn and spring are the sweet spots — the harbour is calmer and there’s less traffic on the water. Summer gets busy, especially around Sydney Harbour and the the Nepean River, so book early if you’re aiming for December or January.
Do I need a licence to take a small boat on the Parramatta River?
If the boat is powered and capable of doing over 10 knots (about 18.5 km/h), then yes – a boat licence is required. We train right on the Parramatta River so you get firsthand experience navigating tidal flow and ferry activity.
Is it harder to get a boat licence in Sydney because of all the ferries?
It’s definitely a factor – Sydney’s commercial traffic (especially around Circular Quay and Pyrmont) requires sharper awareness. Our training focuses heavily on Collision Regulations and interpreting ferry activity so you stay safe and legal.
